Sugar Fast Day 2

Yesterday was hard! A sugar fast is hard!!! And today is shaping up to be a challenge as well. There is sugar in everything!!! And I feel like because I cut out my morning creamer, the rest of my day has been one sugary craving after another. And it’s true, because sugar is addictive-it tempts you, it draws you in, and you become seduced by it. So your body and mind are bound to be having a bit of a temper tantrum right now, stomping and crying out for sugar in any form. We must remind ourselves that the start of something is always difficult. If it wasn’t, it wouldn’t be a challenge then, right? We have to remember that today is only day 2. The key is to start off small. Make it manageable… doable… and ultimately achievable.

To avoid any further distraction and temptation, I quickly pick up my trusted companion through this fast and begin to read. I’m reminded once again why I’m doing this. Yes, it’s a reset for my health and my physical body, but also for my spiritual well-being. As I feast on the words Wendy has written, I begin to feel understood and from that, filled up. She writes, “I was worn out and joyless.” Wow, can I relate. This thing we call life can take a real toll on us. Whether it be work, friendships, parenthood, marriage, (or lack of those for that matter), or just getting through the day; life can feel, well, joyless at times. We need to take charge. And this fast is a great start.

Yes it’s challenging. That’s part of what it’s all about.

I remember a text that my sister had sent me after I told her I had been struggling with a difficult day where I was “worn out and joyless.” She simply said, “I think both you and me need a positive, fun outlet. I feel like I haven’t really truly laughed and enjoyed life in awhile. Maybe that’s what we’re missing… so caught up in the demands of everyday life and extra stressors, it’s like we need something more, laughter and joy…” Oh wow, the profound message in this! Thank you for that sis!

Do you feel that way too sometimes? Worn out? Joyless? I know I do way too often. Well, let’s do it then! Let’s find the laughter and joy through this challenging fast. Do some soul searching for what makes you laugh with abandon and do it!! Together we’ll find the joy.
