Sugar Fast Day 1

Good morning, friends. Welcome to the challenge! Going without sugar for 40 days. Are you in?! This is the fourth time around that I am doing this particular sugar fast. The book that I’m following is The 40-Day Sugar Fast by Wendy Speake. As for how you go about it, it’s all up to you. I love following a book for the structure and encouragement and think this particular one is great. I suggest that you at least set some sort of guidelines before you begin so that you have direction. Cutting out sugar can be a doozy in itself, and you don’t want to stress out or get distracted by the logistics of it all while trying to slay that sugar dragon.

Today is the day where we simply get our feet wet. Small changes that feel so big, and really are when it boils down to it. These seemingly small changes are about to transform your entire being, inside and out. You make your morning coffee and nix the sugary creamer. You pour yourself a seltzer instead of a sugary soda. Before bed you turn on the tea kettle instead of opening up that package of double stuffed Oreos.

There are a ton of reasons to embark on this sugar fast journey. My suggestion is to make it your own, while ensuring you hold yourself accountable, so that you can see the change you are longing for-whatever that may be. Now I’m choosing to make this a spiritual quest as well, which I highly recommend, but you tackle it the way you desire. Whatever you do, allow it to bring you to a place of staying present and aware. Whenever I do any sort of fast, my awareness of my tendency to be mindless is extremely heightened. I’m suddenly aware that I shouldn’t grab that half eaten leftover chocolate granola bar that one of my kids left sitting on the table (or floor… 5 second rule). Or sneak a bite out of my daughter’s left over birthday cake that’s taunting me on my way to wash the dishes.

So, whatever you choose to do and however you choose to do it, make sure you are present and aware, that is transforming in itself. Let’s do this together you Gnarly Sugar Fasters!

Gnarly Things to Check Out

Book: The 40-Day Sugar Fast by Wendy Speake

Tip of the Day: If you enjoy your coffee in the morning, like I do, and feel lost without your sugary creamer, don’t worry. Many flavored coffees are simply coffee and natural flavors. For a treat, brew yourself a French Vanilla or a Toasted Graham and add Nut Pods creamer or half and half. You’ll feel like you’re being naughty, but there’s no sugar at all. Or be bold and drink it black.
