Sugar Fast Day 14

We’re two weeks in now. Day 14 is here!

How are you feeling? Have you been checking in with your heart? Have you discovered anything else that you run to instead of sugar? I sure have. I realize I have a tendency to perpetually turn to the same things-tv shows, incessant cleaning, obsessive worrying, and perhaps coffee. In small doses these are all fairly benign, but when I run to them with the same urgency as I would to a sugary treat, they can become very destructive.

And when I explore a bit further, I discover the things that trigger me to go down this dark path of obsession and addiction. Hardships and trauma from my past, the longing for the simplicity and innocence of my childhood, and the extremely destructive path of unrealistic expectations of what I think life should be. All of which bring me to an uneasy state of anxiety and unrest. A path of destruction, where bad habits and negativity creep in to steal your joy.

So, what do we do about it? We remind ourselves to stay present in this moment. We take time to be thankful. We sit and meditate and pray on what else we struggle with. We begin to figure out what we run to in order to try to fill our soul. The things that no matter how much we fill ourselves up with, in the end only leave us feeling even more empty. We explore, we acknowledge, we embrace, and then we attempt to move beyond to the other side where there’s peace, contentment, and freedom. Let’s free ourselves today on this two-week mark. Know that you are not alone. We are in this life together.
